The first school was a private school that took place in the home of the teacher's (Mary Howe) father's home.

This was taught in a log cabin by Rev. William leggett. He taught 1 term. Miss Lockwood took over and taught in her uncle's home.

Due to rapid growth of enrollment the school was moved to the second story of the court house. In 1872, a fire destroyed the building. The moved to a two story structure which was the antler hotel.

The new school was built and finished. They named the building The 1914 building.
