  • President's Committee on Mental Retardation

    President's Committee on Mental Retardation
    Former president John F. Kennedy established the President's Committee on Mental Retardation to become better aware of ways the federal government could be involved in making equal education for special education children.
  • Elementary & Secondary Education Act

    Elementary & Secondary Education Act
    Theh Elementary & Secondary Education Act provided the first state-level grant issued for children with disabilities. The act requires equal education experiences for all students in hopes for them to receive the same educational outcome. The funds are to be used for professional development, instructional materials, and also for resources to support the educational program offered to the students. The law becomes re-revised every five years to be sure it is keeping up to date.
  • Education for All Handicapped Children Act

    Education for All Handicapped Children Act
    The Education for All Handicapped Children Act made it possible for all children with disabilities to be able to attend public school and receive minimum standards when it comes to their participation in activities.
  • Section 504

    Section 504
    Section 504 became in affect under the Rehabilitation Act Amendments of 1973. "Section 504 mandated that no person with a disability could be excluded from or denied benefits of any program receiving federal financial assistance, which would include public elementary, secondary, and postsecondary schools" (Wood, 7). This was put into place to make sure that students with disabilities were being given the same opportunity for the same education as those students without disabilities.
  • Early Intervention Program

    Early Intervention Program
    The Early Intervention Program was put into place to assist states in providing a "system that makes early intervention services available to all children with disabilities from birth to age 3" (Wood,9).
  • Americans with Disabilities Act

    Americans with Disabilities Act
    The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), requires equal opportunities for people with disabilities when it comes to recruitment, hiring, and/or termination. Accomidations must be made for individuals with disabilities if needed for them to perform the task being asked to complete.
  • No Child Left Behind

    No Child Left Behind
    No Child Left Behind requires all students to complete a standardized test. Highly qualified teachers are to be hired to teach all children and schools/teachers are to take responsibility for their students' test scores.
