ham the astrochimp
Originally called number 65, Ham was launched into space on January 31st 1961. Ham was born in 1957 in the French Cameroons in West Africa. He was nicknamed after the (H)olloman (A)erospace (M)edical center. He underwent training at the Holloman Air Force base in New Mexico. There were technical difficulties during the flight, the spacecraft went up too high too quickly and landed further than planned. He shook hands when he returned with the commander and gladly accepted an apple. -
Yuri Gagarin
Yuri was a soviet pilot and cosmonaut who was the first human to journey into outer space and complete an orbit around the earth. He had a 108 minute flight in a small aircraft called the Vostok spacecraft. upon his return he was appointed Commander of the Cosmonauts' Detachment. -
Alan Shepard
Full name Alan Bartlett Shepard jr. became the first american in space. He went up 116 miles then came back down. his second flight was on Apollo 14. on February 15 he and Apollo 14 landed on the moon. he is the first person to hit a golf ball on the moon. Hes one of nasa's first seven astronauts. he worked on a ship during ww2. He became an astronaut in 1959 -
