U.S. citizen John Glenn becames the first American to orbit the Earth, part of Project mercury. He safely returned to Earth. This was a step further than what Alan Shepard achieved. -
Apollo 11-First Man on the Moon
Earlier, President J.F.K stated that the U.S. should strive to land a man on the moon before the decade was over. Near the end of the decade Apollo 11 did just that. No one says it better than the first man himself, Neil Armstrong:"One small step for man, one giant leap for mankind."
