Soviet Moldova

  • Molotov-Ribbentrop pact

    The Molotov-Ribbentrop pact is signed. It officially was a pact of non-aggression between Germany and the USSR, (not an official alliance). A secret protocol divided Eastern Europe in Soviet and German spheres of influence.
  • Soviet Ultimatum

    The USSR sends an ultimatum to Romania, demanding Romanian withdrawal from Bessarabia and northern Bukovina. Pressured by the Germans, Romanians accept. Most of the region is unified with the Moldovan ASSR to form the Moldovan SSR, although minor parts of both Bessarabia and the Moldovan ASSR are given to the Ukrainian SSR.
  • WW2 starts on the East

    Nazi Germany attacks the USSR. Romanian joins in on the Germans and retakes Bessarabia. Areas between the Dniester and Bug rivers are annexed by Romania and organized as the Transnistria Governorate.
  • Soviet counteroffensives

    During the Dnieper–Carpathian Offensive, the Transnistria Governorate and most of Bessarabia are recaptured by the Soviets.
  • Romania changes sides

    During the Jassy-Kishinev (Iasi-Chisinau) offensives, Bessarabia is recaptured by the Soviets, and Romania joins the Allies, and signs a ceasefire with the USSR.
  • Collectivization

    Collectivization is implemented in Moldova
  • Destalinization

    The Destalinazation process allows deportees to return from the gulags.
  • National Patriotic Front

    A National Patriotic Front is established by young intellectuals. Many members were arrested, after an informative note by the President of the Council of State Security of the Romanian Socialist Republic.
  • Economic Development

    Large amounts of money are spent for development in the Moldovan SSR
  • Change of Alphabets

    The Supreme Soviet of the Moldovan SSR change the alphabet to the Latin one from the Cyrillic one.
  • Transnistria hopes for independence

    The Pridnestrovian Moldavian Soviet Socialist Republic is declared, hoping it would remain in the USSR, but it neither recognized by Moscow or Chisinau
  • Steps towards independence

    Moldova boycotts the referendum on whether to stay on the USSR, along with the Baltic states and Armenia. In May, Moldova changes its name to "Republic of Moldova".
  • Gagauz seperatism

    Gagauzia declares independence
  • Moldovan independence declared

    Moldova declares independence, after the dissolution of the USSR
