    Formation of Free Soil Party
    Anti-slavery people met in Buffalo, New York and formed the party to keep slavery out of the western territories. The formation of the party made it clear that slavery was a national issue and would be going forward.
  • Compromise of 1850

    Compromise of 1850
    Plan of Henry Clay it had five parts, allowed California to enter as a free state, divided the remainder of the Mexican Cession in the territories of New Mexico and Utah, ended slave trade in Washington D.C., strict fugitive slave law and decided a border dispute between Texas and New Mexico They thought the union was saved.

    Uncle Tom's Cabin
    Book by Harriet Beecher Stowe about the horrors of slavery. The book sold millions of copies and opened the eyes of many northerners to what slavery really was all about and it's affect on slaves and their family.
  • Kansas Nebraska Act

    Kansas Nebraska Act
    Stephan Douglas bill to set up a government for the Nebraska Territory that divided it into Kansas and Nebraska and said settlers in each state would decide the issue of slavery by popular sovereignty. The impact was that slavery could continue if the state voted to do so.

    A group of Free Soilers, northern Democrats, and aniti-slavery Whigs formed a party to keep slavery out of the western territories.
    This party helped to bring the issue of slavery to national attention.

    Called this because of allo the violence and loss of life over the issue of slavery in the new territory. Pro and anti slavery opponents clash in Kansas at the town of Lawrence(ant anti-slavery stronghold) The amount of violence and strong feelings on both sides of the slavery issue just got worse.
  • John Brown's Raid

    John Brown's Raid
    John Brown's retaliation for the bloodshed in Lawrence, Kansas. Brown and his four sons went to Pottawatomie Creek and dragged five pro-slavery settlers from their beds and murdered them. The event led to more violence and bloodshed and ended up with the territory being called Bloody Kansas.

    Dredd Scott Case
    Dredd Scott was a slave who had moved with his owner to Wisconsin Territory(no slavery allowed) When his owner died lawyers helped him file papers saying he had lived in a free state and should now be free. His court decision set a precident and insured that slavery would continue in the U.S.

    The election of 1860 put Abraham Lincoln in the offfice of president. Many southerners felt the election of Lincoln meant they no longer had a voice in their countries government and that they should split from the Union.
