The Deciphering of the Rossetta Stone
The Rossetta Stone, an incredibly important key to solving many languistic problems was deciphered by Jean-François Bouchard. The stone contains a decree issued at Mephis in ancient Egypt, and was written in Ancient Egyptian hieroglyphs, Demotic script, and in Ancient Greek. Solving this allowed the duality of languages to be explored, and made deciphering these languages much easier easier. -

Israel becomes an independant nation
The British Mandate expired, and Israel had become an independant nation in the Middle East. Due to the countries strong ties with 'westerners', the surrounding Middle Eastern countries declared war on Israel the day they became a free nation. -
Oil Embargo on Israel-friendly countries
Many countries in the Middle East that were members of OPEC placed an oil embargo on the countries that supported Israel, including the United States. While the embargo didn't last long, the countries affected had their economies crippled. -
Iran forms new government
Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini led the overthrowing of the Shah's dicatorship in Iran, during which the Iranian Hostage Crisis took place. Despite the bloodshed that took place in the overthrow, Khomeini was named the TIME man of the year in 1979.
