  • Homestead Act

    On this day, Abraham Lincoln passes the Homestead Act, a law that granted any citizen or any immigrant seeking citizenship up to 160 acres of land at no cost. The person receiveing the acres of land had to be the head of the household.
  • Morill Land Grant Act

    According to this act, the U.S government gave state grants of land which to establish agricultural colleges. FAMU, the Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University, is an example of a land-grant college. FAMU Coleman Library is shown.
  • Sand Creek Massacre

    On this day, misunderstandings between the the U.S army at Fort Lyon and the Cheyenne led to this massacre. Colonel John Chivington and his troops went in on and attacked at Sand Creek. More than 150 Native Americans were murdered. Some people do not know exactly what caused this attack in the first place to this day.
  • National Grange

    An organization that was established by Oliver Hudson Kelley. This organization was established for the benefit and education of farmers. Kelley started this organization because he visited many farms and saw how much farmers were struggling.

    Falling Farm Income

    During this period, the prices of products were decresing due to the fact that there were many farm goods being brought in to the marketplace. Farmers blamed businesses, banks, and government policies. They blamed the railroads for the very high prices of their ableness to transport crops.
  • Custer's Last Stand (Battle of Little Bighorn)

    On this day, Colonel George A. and the 7th Calvalry, were assigned to secure the Black Hills and stop Native American attacks. George and his army tried take any free Native Americans. This led to the Native American warriors to completely kill everyone on George A.'s army. George Custer is shown.
  • Munn v. Illinois

    In this case, argued between January 14-18 of 1870, was decided on March 1st, 1877. The court ruled that government had the right to regulate private businesses when the public interest was involved.

    Indian Schools

    Native American boarding schools were established during this period. The federal policy required that Native American children be removed from their families and taken away to boarding schools to be educated. The boarding schools tried their best to keep away the young Native Americans from their culture.
  • The Dawes Act

    The Dawes Act was passed by Congress on this day. The law was passed; it was passed in order to intergrate the Native Americans. The Native Americans were given 160 acres of land for each head of the household (each unmarried adult male received 80 acres). The land was part of their reservations.
  • Populist Party Candidate

    James B. Weaver ran in the 1892 presendential election as a Populist candidate. The populist party supported free, unlimited coinage of silver, federal income tax, and government ownership of the railroads. Weaver did not win, but many Populists won seats in Congress.
  • Panic of 1893

    This was the finacial panic caused by the U.S gold reserves. Investors cashed their investments in for gold and the stock market fell and people lost their jobs.
  • Sherman Silver Purchase Act Repealed

    Because of the Panic of 1893, President Cleveland sent a message to repealed the Sherman Silver Purschase Act. This act raised the amount of silver purchased each month by 50%.
