Formed to counter-balance the might of the alliance between Germany and Austria-Hungary, especially in battleships. The alliance made Germany feel surrounded and more keen to go to war as self protection.
Australia thought of itself as part of the British Empire so any deal the UK made was likely to involve Australia. The sides were picked, war just needed a flame.
