    Rebelling at his older brother's attempts to make him work on the farm and in the family's store in Marysville, Houston ran away from home as an adolescent in 1809 to live among the Cherokees, who lived across the Tennessee River. Between visits to Maryville, he traveled for three years with Chief Oolooteka, who adopted him and gave him the Indian name Colonneh, or "the Raven."
