houston lives wih cherokees
Rebelling at his older brother's attempts to make him work on the farm and in the family's store in Marysville, Houston ran away from home as an adolescent in 1809 to live among the Cherokees, who lived across the Tennessee River. Between visits to Maryville, he traveled for three years with Chief Oolooteka, who adopted him and gave him the Indian name Colonneh, or "the Raven." -

houston defeating santa anna
Houston immediately took control of the texas forces after the fall of the alamo and goliad, and conducted the retreat of the army to the site of the battle of san jacinto, where on april 21 1836, his force defeated santa anna and got texas its long sought independence. -
houston served in congress
In the fall of that year, houston was elected the first preident of the republic texas. After serving his term as president, he served in the congress of the republic in 1839 . Then in 1841 , houston was again voted by a large margin to the head of the teaxas government. -

After ststehood in 1845, houston was elected senator from texas to the congress of the unted states. still later 1859 houston was elected to serve as govenor of the state of texas. -
houston was removed from office
As govvernor in 1861, houston was strongly opposed to the secession of texas from the union. Because he was much in minoity on this issue , houston was removed from office in march of 1861, ending his ilustrious carrier in public service. -
houston death
houston retired to the privacy of his home at huntsville, texas, where he died in july of 1863. He is buried in huntsville oakwood cemetery.
