    Alexander III Becomes Czar.
    Alexander II was assassinated on March 1, 1881. Alexander III was next in line, thus making him Czar. Alexander III adopted the idea of autocracy giving himself total power.

    Japan and Russia were both competing in gaining control of Korea and Manchuria. The two countries came to an agreement on the land, however Russia broke these agreements. In breaking these agreements, Japan responded by attacking Russians in Port Arthur, Manchuria causing Russians to revolt in the midst of the war when hearing about the losses.

    Bloody Sunday
    200,000 workers and family members held a petition in their hands in front of the czar's Winter Palace in St. Petersburg. They were demanding better working conditions, more personal freedom, and an elected national legislature when Nicholas II's army open fired on the civilians. A wave of violence and riots swept the countries when people heard about the hundreds of deaths and the 1,000 wounded.

    Russia Gets Involved In World War I
    Russia's weak generals and poorly equipped soldiers were no match for German machine guns. Around 4 million Russian soldiers were either captured, dead or wounded. With food and fuel becoming scarce and prices wildly inflating, all social classes were demanding an end to the war.

    In a 53 year span, the amount of Russian factories doubled and the world's longest continued rail way was put in place. Russia also became the world's 4th highest steel producing country. Due to the rapid Industrialization, new problems started to hit the surface like poor working conditions in factories and extremely low wages.

    Around 200,000 female textile workers led a citywide strike in Petrograd. This protest eventually blew up into a general uprising when soldiers started to shoot but then stopped and joined sides. From these events Nicholas II stepped down as Czar.

    Stepping down as Czar was a choice that was made from the actions of the March Revolution. His decision to abandon the thrown meant an end to the three century czarist rule of his family. Nicholas II stepping down as Czar resulted in the placement of an unstable government system.

    After Nicholas II stepped down the Duma put a temporary government in place, headed by Alexander Kerensky. He decided to continue fighting in World War 1 which lost him all support. Soldiers and civilians were very unhappy and as result the common people established soviets.

    When in power the Bolsheviks gave farmland to peasants and gave control of the factories to the workers. They also signed a peace treaty with Germany stopping all fighting. With this peace treaty Russia gave up a large portion of land triggering angry civilians back in Russia

    The civil war was fought between the Bolsheviks red army and their enemies who didn't support the way they ran things, the white army. Several western countries tried to give aid to the white army but it was not enough. Around 14 million people died from the 3 year long fighting and famines afterwards from the Bolsheviks crushing the white army.
