Rules and Procedures for the First Week of School

  • Day 1

    Day 1
    Welcome students and go over the necessary classroom procedures for the first day of school. Ask the kids how what they think each task should look like and add to it if necessary. -Entering the classroom
    -Lining up
    -Walking through the hall
    -Going to the restroom
    -Recess
    -Lunch Take the students on a tour of the school; practicing some of the procedures listed
  • Day 2

    Day 2
    Play procedures charades to review the procedures that were discussed on the first day. Work as a class to come up with Classroom Rules and create an anchor chart of the rules:
    -Pay attention
    -Follow directions
    -Respect others
    -Participate
    -Raise your hand - don't blurt out!
    -Use your manners
    -Do your best
    -Ask questions
    -Trust yourself Get each student to sign the anchor chart to show that they are agreeing to follow the classroom rules and post it in the classroom.
  • Day 3

    Day 3
    Ask each student to tell the class one of the rules or procedures they followed yesterday and explain what they had to do to ensure they were following it properly.
    Introduce the "Blurt Box" explaining to the students that if they blurt out instead of raising their hand the consequence will be:
    First time: secret signal
    Second Time: verbal reminder
    Third Time: blurt box and teacher talk
    If the student gets to the third time, they will write their name on a piece of paper and put it in the box.
  • Day 4

    Day 4
    Ask students to act out correct/incorrect way to follow rules/procedures in small groups. Get students to present in front of the class.
    Read the pre-written about a student that doesn't follow the classroom rules and procedures. Ask the students to re-write the story on the paper provided; ensuring that the character follows the right rules and procedures.
  • Day 5

    Day 5
    Review and discuss and rules and/or procedures that the class has been having a hard time with.
    Get students to create their own classroom rules poster, using all of the rules that we have come up with as a class (leaving a space of 3 signatures: student, parent, teacher).
    Get students to take the poster home to show their families and get their parent/guardian to sign the poster.
    Ask the students to bring the poster back to be laminated and put in their desk or displayed in the classroom.
