    The Montagues and Capulets are in a feud.

    The Montagues and Capulets have been feuding for generations. For the third time, a street fight has broken out in Verona. Prince Escalus has announced that anyone who fights will be sentenced to death.
  • Rosaline breaks Romeo's heart.

    Rosaline breaks Romeo's heart.

    Romeo loves Rosaline, but it has been implied that Rosaline may be a nun and cannot love Romeo back. Benvolio tries to tell Romeo to look at other women, but Romeo refuses.
  • Lady Capulet informs Juliet that Paris wishes to marry her.

    Lady Capulet, Juliet's mother, tells Juliet than Count Paris wants to marry Juliet. Juliet does not want to be married, and only agrees to this to please her family.

    When Romeo, Benvolio, and Mercutio hear about the Capulet's party from reading an invitation for a servingman, Romeo decides to attend because Rosaline will be there.

    After dancing and sharing a kiss, Romeo and Juliet fall in love with one another. Later, they find out that their families are mortal enemies.

    After Romeo sneaks into the Capulet garden, he overhears her profess her love for him. He makes his presence known to her and climbs to her balcony, where they admit that they love each other. Juliet says that she will send someone to Romeo the next day to arrange their marriage.

    Juliet's Nurse tells Romeo that Juliet wishes to marry him. Romeo tells the Nurse to relay a message to Juliet: if they wish to be married, they must meet with Friar Lawrence. They get married in Friar Lawrence's cell.

    Romeo is challenged to a fight with Tybalt.

    Tybalt, offended that Romeo showed up at the Capulet party, challenges Romeo to a duel. Romeo refuses because they are family now, as he has married Juliet. Mercutio does not realize this, so he fights Tybalt.
  • Mercutio and Tybalt are killed; Romeo is banished.

    While trying to stop the fight between Tybalt and Mercutio, Romeo incidentally makes Mercutio get killed. Angered by his death, Romeo, in a rage, kills Tybalt and flees. Prince Escalus then banishes Romeo to Mantua.

    The Nurse tells Juliet that Romeo has been banished to Mantua. Juliet is so upset by his banishment that she wants to kill herself. Her Nurse arranges for Romeo to spend the night with Juliet.

    Juliet must marry Paris.

    Romeo leaves in the early morning. Lady Capulet tells Juliet that she must be wed to Paris on Thursday. Juliet refuses, getting into an argument with Lord Capulet.

    Juliet sees Friar Lawrence.

    Distraught because of Romeo's banishment, Juliet turns to Friar Lawrence. He gives her a potion that makes her appear dead for 42 hours, telling her to take it on her wedding night so that she will be taken to the Capulet crypt. Friar Lawrence says that he will inform Romeo of the plan and when she awakens, they can escape to Mantua together.
  • Juliet apologizes and takes the potion.

    After apologizing to Lord Capulet and agreeing to marry Paris, Lord Capulet moves Juliet's wedding date to the next day. Going to her bedroom for the night, Juliet takes the potion that Friar Lawrence gives her, at first unsure of his intentions.
  • The Nurse finds Juliet.

    The Nurse finds Juliet.

    After attempting to awaken Juliet for her wedding, the Nurse finds that she is dead. The Friar arrives and tells the Capulets to take Juliet to the Capulet Crypt. Balthasar hears of Juliet's death and tells Romeo the news. Romeo buys poison from the apothecary and travels to Verona to die beside Juliet.
  • Friar Lawrence learns that Romeo did not receive the letter.

    Friar Lawrence learns that Romeo did not receive the letter.

    Friar John tells Friar Lawrence that Romeo did not receive the letter that explained Juliet's plan, prompting Friar Lawrence to write to Romeo again.
  • Friar Lawrence and Paris visit Juliet's grave.

    Friar Lawrence and Paris visit Juliet's grave.

    Friar Lawrence travels to the crypt. Paris too travels to the crypt to place flowers on Juliet's grave, where he sees Romeo.
  • Romeo and Paris fight.

    Romeo and Paris fight.

    Romeo and Paris duel, where Paris falls. Romeo then takes the poison he bought and dies next to Juliet.
  • Juliet commits suicide.

    Juliet commits suicide.

    Friar Lawrence arrives and Juliet awakens, seeing the dead bodies of both Paris and Romeo. The Friar cannot comfort her and she stabs herself with Romeo's dagger, falling upon his body.

    The page and watchmen arrive to find all three bodies. Lord and Lady Capulet, Lord Montague, and Prince Escalus arrive when they find Friar Lawrence. The Friar explains everything that happened from their secret marriage to their deaths.

    The Capulets and Montagues realize that the feud was the ultimate demise of their children and end it.
