    Missouri Compromise
    The Missouri Compromise was made as an effort to keep the balance between slave states and free states. The compromise made Maine a free state and Missouri a slave state. It also made slavery in Louisiana illegal in areas north of the 36 30 latitude line.
  • Texas Annexation

    After the Texans went to war with Mexico for independence ther Texans wanted to be annexed from Mexico, but Mexico threatened to got to war with them if they did this. James K. Polk did it anyways, and the Mexicans did not hold true to there threat.
  • "54-40 or Fight"

    "54-40 or Fight"
    The term "54-40 or Fight" refers a campaign slogan used by Jame K. Polk during the election of 1844. The latitude line 54-40 is the northern boundary of Oregon. He used this term to say that he was willing to go to war to get more territory for the U.S. This ultimately won him the election.
  • Wilmot Proviso

    Wilmot Proviso
    The Wilmot Proviso was an amendment to bill passed that gave 2 million dollars to Polk to buy territory from Mexico. The amendment was introduced by David Wilmot. This also prohibited any territory obtained from Mexico to become pro-slavery areas.
  • Treaty of Guadalupe-Hidalgo

    Treaty of Guadalupe-Hidalgo
    This treaty brought an official end to the Mexican-American war. This treaty was signed on February 2, 1848. Under this treaty Mexico ceded upper California and New Mexico to the United States. This treaty also established the southern boundary of the United States at the Rio Grande.

    The Compromise of 1850 consisted of 5 laws that all dealt with slavery. The five things it did was, the fugitive slave law was amended, the slave trade in Washington D.C. was abolished, California entered the Union as a free state, a territorial government was created in Utah, and an act was passed settling a territorial boundary dispute between Texas and New Mexico was settled.

    Uncle Tom's Cabin was a book wrote about a slave that was forced to leave a family that loved him and he loved them, the family he was forced to go to beat him to death. She wrote this as a way to inform people of the horrors of slavery in the southern regions of America.
  • Gadsden Purchase

    Gadsden Purchase
    The Gadsden Purchase was an agreement between the United States and Mexico. The United states agreed to pay Mexico 10 million dollars for a 29,670 square mile portion of Mexico which later became part of Arizona and New Mexico.
  • Republican Party Founded

    Republican Party Founded
    The Republican party was formed from some Whig members after the Whig party broke up because of slavery. There was a meeting held by some Whigs in Wisconsin, this is where the Republican party originated.

    The Kansas-Nebraska act basically repealed the Missouri Compromise by allowing slave territory to the north of 36 30 latitude. This act was introduced by the senator of Illinois Stephen Douglas. This caused violence in Kansas between pro-slavery people and anti-slavery people.

    The Brooks-Sumner incident was an attack on Charles Sumner by Preston Brooks. Brooks attacked Sumner by beating him over the head with a cane repeatedly. He did this because Sumner slandered Brooks name by saying his Uncle slept with a slave.

    Harpers ferry was a plan to take over Harpers ferry and get the slaves captured there to rebel. This plan did not work and the man that came up with this plan, John Brown, was killed shortly after the raid, along with his two sons.

    The election of 1860 was between Abraham Lincoln, Stephen Douglas, John Breckinridge, and John Bell. The winner of this election was Abraham Lincoln by a fairly large margain. He was the first Republican president that we had.
  • Firing on Fort Sumter

    The confederates wanted to obtain Fort Sumter, but the people in Fort Sumter did not want to give it up, and after a time of trying to negociate it over to the Confederates, the Confederates fired upon Fort Sumter which started a battle that ended in no deaths, but Fort Sumter was given over to the Confederates.

    The Battle of Bull Run was said to be the first battle of the Civil War. This battle was fought near Manassas Junction, Virginia. The winner of this battle was the Rebels. This war proved to the North that the Rebels wouldnt be easily beaten.
  • Monitor v. Merrimac

    This was the first engagement fought between ironclad ships. It was a four hour close quarters battle which ended in a draw between the ships.
  • Battle of Antietam

    Battle of Antietam
    This battle was fought between the generals Robert E. Lee and George McClellan, they fought by the Antietam creek in Sharpsburg, Maryland. This was the first fight fought on northern soil. Robert E. Lee won this battle.
  • Battle of Gettysburg

    Battle of Gettysburg
    This was the largest battle of the Civil war. This battle was fought between Major General George Gordon Meade, and General Robert Edward Lee. The battle was won by the Union or more commonly reffered to as the North.
  • Sherman's March

    Sherman's March
    Shermans March was also known as the Savanna campaign. Shermans army captured the city of Atlanta and after this happened he chased the army he just beat to the port of Savanna and captured that also.
  • Appomattox Court House

    Appomattox Court House
    This battle was said to be the last battle in Virginia. This battle was between Lee and Grant. This was a last ditch effort for Lee to get to Lynchburg to meet up with the rest of his army. He failed at this attempt and lost this battle.
