Also Missouri was added as a free state and Maine and was added into the Union. But due to this compromise, when the United States kept adding new states, the question arises "Should this be a free state or slave state?"

    Southern lawmakers passed the Fugitive slave act of 1850 which is an addition to the fugitive slave act of 1793 that encouraged capturing runaway slaves with rewards and punished the people who interfered with the capture. The north hated the new act because it only benefitted the south and encouraged more slavery. This only caused more tensions between the north and south when the north wanted this act repealed.

    Uncle Tom's Cabin was a anti-slavery novel written by Harriet Beecher Stowe. It's about a family called the Harris's and Uncle tom. But Arthur Harris, their slave master must sell them to pay off debts. This book spread the belief of abolishment in the north which opposed slavery. The south hated this book and figuratively split the nation in half.

    Bleeding Kansas was the fight the North and South over Kansas, to be admitted with in the Union or the Confederacy. This little conflict between the North and South lasted over seven years, until the North or the Union won control over Kansas and admitted into the union. As the Republican party emerged from this conflict, the hostility of the south became more apperant as the newly party carried out policies that helped the Union.

    Kansas-Nebraska Act
    The Kansas-Nebraksa act allowed popular sovereignty to decide if a new state was going to become apart of the union or the confederacy. So Nebraska joined the union, but Kansas also joined the union. So this became a problem because two states joining the Union increased the unions power. As well as increased tension in the north and the south when the north and south fought over Kansas.

    Charles Sumner was the current senator of Massachusetts who was an abolitionist and the current republican leader. He was attacked by Preston Brooks with a cane after Sumner gave a speech called,"The crime against Kansas" which talked about abolishing slavery in the united states the day before. This caused some tension between southerners and northers because Brooks was a Democratic that was pro-slavery, attacking Sumner the abolitionist.

    Dred Scott V. Sandford
    Dred Scott was a slave that attempted to buy freedom from his master Eliza Irene Sanford refused then was disputed in a state court that ultimately got moved to the supreme court. The supreme determined that Scott couldn't buy any property or sue anybody because he was a slave, and slaves are not citizens. The aftermath caused the north to hate this court decision and the south benefitted from this and caused many conflicts between the north and south.

    Lincoln-Douglas Debates

    The Lincoln-Douglas debates were a series of debates between Republican candidate Abraham Lincoln and Democratic Stephen Douglas over how to handle slavery in the United States. Douglas had an idea that Popular Soverignty would end slavery. Lincoln opposed this idea and wasnted emanicipation to end slavery. This in return made the south hate both politicians because both Lincoln and Douglas found ways to end slavery in the United States, which the south did not want to end.

    Raid on Harper's Ferry

    John Brown was an abolitionist that started a slave revolt in 1859, by taking control of the United States weapons in Virginia. Him and 21 other men took control of the weapons, but Brown was captured by Marines and later hanged. The south lated mentioned this raid explaining that the North will try to end slavery and by using force. To encourage more of the South to engage conflict with the North

    The Election of 1860 was an election between the republican Abraham Lincoln, John C. Breckinridge representing Southern Democrats, Stephen A. Douglas of the Democrats, and John Bell of the Constitutional Union. Abraham Lincoln won the election, but not without backlash. And that backlash came from the south because since an Abolitionist was elected president. They feared that Slavery would end at the hands of Abraham Lincoln. Which made things worse between the north and south.

    After the Election of 1860, South Carolina did the unthinkable and seceded from the Union. They voted to secede because of the aboltionist, Abraham Lincoln became president. Also to keep slavery alive. This was the breaking point between the North and South because seven other states also seceded from the Union. Seceding from the United States.
