This is when California entered the union as a free state and the territorial government was created for Utah and Mexico to make a boundary between Texas and the United States. The Fugitive slave act was made to return slave back to there if they fled to a free state that had to return. This act was passed on September 18, 1850 by the congress. This event led to the civil war becasue this act pushed back on slavery and this made the south fear the end of slavery so this created tensions. -
The bleeding Kansas happens when a group of anti slavery and pro-slavery start entering territory’s. John brown had killed five pro-slavery advocates and a total of 55 people died. All these deaths happened in 1856. This event helped lead to the civil war becasue the north and south were divided on slavery.

The Kansas-Nebraska Act repealed the Missouri Compromise and this act created two new territories, this was signed off by Franklin Pierce. This all led to the uprising and rebelling of pro-slaves and anti slavery which all of this leads to the civil war. -
In the United States senate chamber the representative Preston brooks used a walking cane to attack senator Charles sumner a republican from Massachusetts. This event led to the civil war because the issue on slavery and it was symbolic to breakdown slavery and this violence led to the civil war. -
This was when Dred Scott and Sanford went to court when Scott sued Sanford saying that he was a free man becasuse he lived in a territory where slavery was banned but Sanford won because the Supreme Court stated that enslaved people are not citizens of the U.S. therefore they can not be protected by the federal government or the court. This event led to the civil war because it showed that even if you make it to a free state you are still a slave and this divided the north and the south. -
This is when Douglas beat Lincoln with democrats gaining 46 and the republicans 41. Douglas may have won the battle but Lincoln won the war when he was elected president later on. This all happen because the argument on slavery and its impact on the country and politics. This event led to the civil war because douglas would disagree with Lincoln’s ways of freeing all slaves and black people being able to do what white people can and this separated the nation. -
John brown leads a group of slaves to help him raid and rebel against the state of Virginia. Things didn’t go as he planned 16 people were killed in the raid, 10 of them were brown men. John brown was captured and sent to jail with other men they had captured on October 19, 1859. This event led to the civil war because it mad tensions between the south and the north even after this raid had failed. -
Abraham Lincoln won the presidential election of 1860. He received less than 40% of the popular vote but he easily won the electoral votes over Stephan Douglas and John Breckinridge and John bell. Lincoln did not support slave states at all he was against all of it. This led to the civil war becasuse the south disagree with Lincoln and thought he had too much power and that he could easily free all slaves.
