Restructuring the Post World War Timeline

  • Nationalists escape to Taiwan

    Jiang's army was defeated by Mao's great army. The nationalists under Jiang fled south. In 1949, Mao gained control of CHina. He called it the People's Republic of China. Jiang and the nationalists escaped to Taiwan.
  • Great Leap Forward

    The Great Leap Forward proclaimed by Mao, called for larger collective farms, or communes. At the end of the year, around 25,000 communes were established. The life was strictly controlled in the communes. The farmers at in communal dining rooms and did everything together and the same almost. The program failed and killed 20 million people out of famine.
  • Cultural Revolution

    The Red Guards started an uprising called the Cultural Revolution. Its purpose was to create a society of farmers and workers where all were equal. The smart and artistic activites were considered useless and dangerous. The Red Guards shut down schools and targeted those who resisted. Smart people had to purify themselves through hard labor. Thousands were executed and chaos shut down factories.
  • Fall of Saigon

    The communists surrounded Saigon the capital of South Vietnam (former) and took over the city. Before the captured it though, the US evacuated the city and left thousands of people in the city. They gave a ton of visas out to Korean citizens to be evacuated but many couldn't get one. After the US carried out as many people as they could, the left to their aircraft carriers and abandoned the people of Saigon. The communists took over and in all 1.5 million people were evacuated.
  • Khmer Rouge

    The Khmer Rouge, or communist rebels, set up a communist government under Pol Pot.; In his attempt to make Cambodia communist, he killed 2 million people. He killed almost one fourth of the population. The vietnamese invaded in 1978 and overthrew the Khmer Rouge.
