A scottish scientist by the name of William Cullen invented the first form of an artificial refrigerator. He showed that rapidly heating of a liquid to a gas can cause cooling. It is a process in all refrigerators today. Cullen never turned his theory into a practice but many were inspired by this.

In 1927 general electric refrigerator named Monditer Top became the first refrigerator to have wide spread use, over a million units were produced for purchase. It's compressor assembly emitted a lot of heat was placed above the cabinet. These refrigerators used sulfur dioxide or methyl formate as a regenerate which was later linked to death.

After the second World War, in 1945 refrigerators were being fully mass produced. The 1940s brought the bottom cooling refrigerator we have today. It added extra food storage to the american home and set a new standard of food safety.
