Reading History Chronology

  • PSAT

    PSAT
The PSAT preparation was an event which shaped the way in which I had begun to read. I had began this process in the 8th grade. Using the Princeton Review course prep, I had come to expand my vocabulary.
  • SAT

    SAT
Using the Princeton Review, I had began to look deeper at meaning with the vocabulary words that I had learned for the PSAT. This had began with the SAT which I had begun to prepare for in my sophomore year of high school. I had taken the PSAT in 1999 and the SAT in 2000. I had done relatively well on both.
  • ENG 101

    ENG 101
During my first year in college, in 2001, I had learned that reading is not simply a matter of comprehension. I learned that while my comprehension was good, my writing was deficient. I did not learn how to properly write during high school and it showed in my freshman year at Florida A & M University. I earned a C in ENG 101 as a result.
  • ENG 102

    ENG 102
In ENG 102 I had learned to write a little better. After learning how I was deficient in ENG 101, I had worked to learn to write at the college level. I earned an A this time.
  • Supply Specialist

    Supply Specialist
After reclassifying to another military occupation in 2009, I had learned how heavily I had to draw from military regulations in order to justify my work in my new MOS. I had to learn to search an entire Army regulation for a key word in order to truly understand certain logistic procedures.
  • NCO Core

    NCO Core
After becoming a non commissioned officer, I had to learn to read between the lines with respect to Army Programs. I had to do this in order to protect my subordinates from getting chaptered for being out of the Army.
  • Property Liability

    Property Liability
As a supply NCO, I had to begin to look at supply policy in protecting my commander from liability exposure with respect to the property under his custody. My evaluation as a logistician was in question, if I failed in this regard. I had to look at supply regulations and be able to cite the regulation when advising commanders and negligent soldiers whom I had to charge with property loss, damage or destruction.
  • COM 102

    COM 102
After returning to the civilian world and beginning my second academic career at the University of Nevada Las Vegas, I had to learn that communication was as much nonverbal as verbal. This I had learned in Communications 102. I had learned to read a person's kinesics in addition to their actual spoken words. Meaning had many dimensions in communication. I had learned about nonverbal communication during a prior military leadership course.
  • ECON 102

    ECON 102
After matriculating to CSN from UNLV, I had learned that economics required the student to look at a combination of economic arguments with statistical support. This is the first time that I was required to evaluate a hypothesis and use formulas in support or refutation of economic theories.
  • HIST 432

    HIST 432
After graduating from CSN and becoming a history major, I really had to begin to read for deeper meaning. I had to look at social, economic and political events in order to come to some conclusion about historical movements. I had to look at documents such as the U.S. Constitution and interpret its meaning.
