Beginning during The Great Depression, radio became a common past time. Radio shows diversified, from soap operas to variety shows to comedies across the radio. Ended in the 1940's; radio began to die in popularity as TV shows were created. -
All of radio had been in AM, or Amplitude Modulation; this was best used to transmit human voices whilst travelling the farthest. FM radio was created by Edwin Armstrong, with FM specializing in broadcasting music. This helped radio stay relevant after the introduction of TV.
