    An Italian inventor named Guglielmo Marconi sent the first radio broadcast. His first transmissions traveled only a mile away. He moved from Italy to England to further his research in radio broadcasting.

    Lee De Forest, created or borrowed the audion tube, a vacuum that amplified signals. it for the speakers in your car to sound really good. with this you can now transmit signals further (50-60) miles
  • World War One

    The war is important to radio technically as the vacuum tube, invented earlier by De Forest is improved for war communications ,and all other radio patents are pooled for defense reasons.All amateur wireless stations are ordered shut down,silent, so the government can use radio for defense purposes.

    Frank Conrad led to establish of the first commercial radio station. Applied for a license for station KDKA. Conrad's research included shortwave radio experiments, which led to the eventual radio relay of network broadcast, and work on radio transmitting equipment.

    in 1922 WEAF aired a 10 minute commercial or toll broadcast,for an apartment complex charging $50. they make money off the commercials that are aired.

    Personal radio stations. Everyone wanted to have there own radio station. All different stations are going back and forth around the area. you had to have license to have a personal radio and it impacted those people.

    As popularity grew, advertisers went to TV. Radio lost money , radio shows jumped ship. Radio gets money through advertising.
  • Golden Era

    Around this time radio was at his finest. Everyone listen to the radio. in the 30's and the 40's. There was a war and the Great Depression. People were hunting for money.Radio had an escape, because instead of worrying about all the bad things in your life there was the radio to basically relax you.

    Very few options. Jukeboxes , records, live concerts. Now in days we can listen to music in our cars,and at home.
  • Edwin Armstrong invents FM

    there was a new service that eliminates the static and noise and the bad audio.Around this time radio was only on AM. Government came out and made everyone switch to digital. Quality of the picture was way better.
