  • Italian Inventor - Marconi

    An Italian Inventor named Marconi basically invented radio. He sent and recived first Radio signal. It's a posibility that he didnt do it.
  • Audion Tube

    In 1906, Lee De Forest, created the audion tube. It was a type of vaccum that amplified signals. It was widely believed that a Canadian inventer, Reginald Fessenden, came up with the idea, but he didnt make it into the History books.
  • Radio Stations

    It took 25 years for people to be able to broadcast live radio. KDKA was the first radio station. Its original name was 8XK. It was created by Frank Conrad. The radio station is still around today broadcasting out of Pittsburg, Pennsylvania.
  • Uncle Charlie

    A term that is used for personal radio stations. You could run your own radio station if you had the equipment. But the problem with that was everyone wanted to have their own personal radio station, and when someone had their own, they would pick up others around them.
  • The Dawn of Advertising

    The only way for radio stations to mke money was by broadcasting commercials. In 1922 WEAF aired a 10 minute commercial or toll broadcast, charging $50.
  • FRC

    Uncle Charlie was getting too popular. So, the FRC was established in 1927. It organized the licensing of transmitters. Assigning radio station fequencies, call letters, and power limits.
  • Call Letters

    Call letters are descrbing where the station is at. For example, W is East of the Missisippi River, and K is Wesr of the Mississippi River.
  • Golden Era

    When radio was at its finest. This is when everybody listened to the radio. This was in the middle of the Great Depression and the war, and radio provided an escape for people.

  • Radio's Demise

    Tv made an apperance in the late 30's
    As popularity grew, Advertisments went to TV
    Radio lost money, and they jumped ship. The radio was saved by... MUSIC!!
  • Why Music?

    At this time you didnt have alot of options. You had the Jukebox, records, and live concerts. Music filled a void on the radio.
  • Radio's Progression.

    Major Edwin Armstrong incented the FM transmitter, which made a stronger signal and a higher quality sound. Listeners were forced to buy new radio sets.

    Music was on FM
