Gibbons v. Ogden- 1824, a new york state law gave two individuals the right to operate steamboats on waters within the state boundaries. a law like this were duplicated elsewhere which led to friction as some states would require out of state boats to pay substantial fees. a steam boat owner, gibbons, did business between new york and new jersey had challenged the monopoly that new york had granted. this forced him to obtain a special operating permit from the state to navigate on its waters.
