    Andrew Jackson was born in Waxhaw, SC. His parents were immigrants. His father passed away a few weeks before he was born. He grew up in poverty.

    Jackson joined at age 13 and served as a courier in the American Revolutionary War. He was a prisoner of war and both of his brothers died during this time (1779 - 1781)

    His mother passes away and he is now an orphan. His uncles raise him and he studies law.
  • Becomes an Attorney

    Jackson passes the bar and becomes an attorney. He practices in what was the western district of NC, but is now part of Tennessee.

    House of Representatives and Senator

    Jackson was elected to the House of Representatives by Tennessee for only a year. He chose not to seek re-election. In 1797, he was elected to the Senate and resigned in 1798.

    The Jackson's never had any biological children. They adopted Severn Donaldson from his wife's bother. He was re named Andrew Jackson, Jr. They later adopted Lyncoya in 1813, a Native American child that was found with his dead mother during a battle. The Jackson's took him in and adopted him. The last adopted child was Andrew Jackson Hutchings, who became an orphan at age 5, was adopted in 1817

    One of his greatest victories was the Battle of Horseshoe Bend. He defeated the Red Sticks, part of the Creek Indian tribe. They opposed the expansion of America and this battle ended the Creek War.

    Jackson became a national hero for his victory in the Battle of New Orleans. He led troops in a victory over the British to gain control of the port.

    The Indian Removal Act of 1830 was passed. This act gave Jackson the power to make treaties with tribes that caused the displacement and relocation of many Native Americans. The act is was eventually led to the Trail of Tears.

    Vetoes the 2nd Bank of the US

    Jackson vetoes the renewal charter of the 2nd Bank of the United States. He opposed the concept of a national bank and this was one of his biggest controversies as President.
  • Death

    He retires after his second term in 1837. Jackson dies at the age of 78 at his home in Tennessee eight years later.
