    Nat Turner's Rebellion
    A slave rebellion in Virginia led by, slave, Nat Turner. Around 55-65 white people were killed and many slaves were killed at the end of the rebellion. The slave heads were put on stakes to prevent future rebellions.

  • Battle of the Alamo

    Battle of the Alamo
    Texans declared independence from Mexico but the Mexican government wouldn't have that and they sent in troops to take the garrison of men out. The men at the Alamo held up for a few days but were wiped out in the end.

  • Assassination of Minister Elijah P. Lovejoy (abolitionist)

    Assassination of Minister Elijah P. Lovejoy (abolitionist)
    Lovejoy was murdered because he created a newspaper that was pro-abolition. The anti-abolitionists didn't like the newspaper and tried to put a stop to it four times before they had a gunfight and ended up killing Lovejoy.

    The California Gold Rush was taking place and there were already Natives, Mexicans, and Californios in California living their lives. The white settlers came in and, after the gold was gone, they started taking the land away and killing the Natives (sometimes by force, sometimes by accident like disease).

    Henry S. Foote pulled a pistol on an anti-slavery Senator. We don't exactly know why. We do know that Senator Foote was notorious for getting into fights and being very superstitious over every little thing.

    Border Ruffians
    Groups of pro-slavery people who rushed into Kansas after the Kansas-Nebraska Act to force Kansas to allow slavery by voting. They also caused trouble later on with fights and violence.

    Bleeding Kansas
    After the border ruffians crossed the border, they tried to make slavery allowed in Kansas but they were getting nowhere because the anti-slavery people rushed into Kansas to make it a free state. Both groups got frustrated and tensions were high. It ended up with many violent fights and around 200 people dying.

    John Brown's Raid
    John Brown was a super abolitionist who had the idea to start a huge slave rebellion by arming the slaves with weapons raided from the Federal Arsenal in Virginia. His plan was an epic failure and he got no slaves on his side, He just ended up being put to death for his crimes. He deepened the divide between the North and the South.

  • The Battle of Fort Sumter

    The Battle of Fort Sumter
    Fort Sumter was a Union held fort that was attacked and taken over by the Confederates to basically start the Civil War. The battle took 34 hours but no men were killed.
