  • Missouri Compromise

    Missouri Compromise
    It kept the balance of power in the Senate between slave states and free states. Also banned slavery in the Louisiana Territory north of Missiour's southern border. Missouri was to be a slave state.
  • Wilmot Proviso

    Wilmot Proviso
    The wilmot proviso was created to outlaw savery in any territories the united states might have recieved from the war with Mexico, David Wilmot proposed the bill. Slave holders believed they had the igh tot bring their slaves into any territories because they viewed slaves as property which the Wilmot Proviso removed the right to do. But the southerners prevented it from passing the senate. And even though the Wilmot proviso never became a law, it lead to the creation of the free soil party.
  • Compromise of 1850

    Compromise of 1850
    Created in 1820, passed June of 1850. It was a seires of laws to settle problems between North and South. California would be a free state, South would be able to expanded slavery into territories won from Mexico.

    Writen by Harriet Beacher Stowe to show how immoral and brutal slaver y was. The book's main character was uncle tom, an older slave. The book explains Tom's life in slavery with a cruel owner, and Outraged northerners by showing what slavery has become.
  • Pottawatomie Massacre

    Pottawatomie Massacre
    On May 25th of 1854 an extreme abolitionist named John Brown and seven other men went to cabin's of several prosavery neighbors and murdered five people. This became jknown as the Pottawatomie Massacre near where the victims were found.
  • Kansas-Nebraska Act

    Kansas-Nebraska Act
    People didn't know how to settle if Kansas was a slave or free state, Douglas suggested it was to be solved by popular soverignty, if bill ws passed it would outlaw the missouri compromise, Because of popular soverignty proslavery settlers won, made kansas a slave state, but the anti slavery settlers didnt like it so they formed their own govverntment, which caused violence between the two groups, which became known as "Bleeding Kansas".

    In May of 1856 a pro-slavery mob attacked the town of lawerence, destroyed houses and offices of anti slavery government and this became known as the sack of Lawerence.
  • Dred Scott V. Sanford

    Dred Scott V. Sanford
    Dred scott sued U.s courts for his freedom, but they told him he could not sue in U.S. courts because he was not a U.S. citizen. Also becuase he was bound by Missouri's slave code. Because he lived in Missouri. Scott's time in free territory did not matter in his case.

    Election made it clear that the nation was tired of compromise. Lincoln was in the North and Breckinridge owned the South. Lincoln won but despite his promise not to abolish slavery, states still threatend to seceed!
  • South Carolina Seceding from the Union

    South Carolina was the first state to secede from the union due to the 1860 election. Soon after many states such as Mississippi, Florida, Alabama, Georgia, Louisiana, and Texas seceded. And became known as the Confederate states of America.
