  • Berlin Aircraft

    Berlin Aircraft
    The Soviet Union cut off all traffic and water to West Berlin hoping that the Allies will give up on West Berlin or the idea of reunifying Germany.
  • Formation of NATO

    Formation of NATO
    Nato was created as a defensive alliance due to fears of Soviet aggression. Twelve nations, including the U.S. and Canada were a part of the alliance.
  • Launch of Sputnik

    Launch of Sputnik
    Soviets launched Sputnik in 1957, and was the first unmanned satellite into space. Sputnk used an intercontinental ballistic missle or ICBM.
  • Bay of Pigs invasion

    Bay of Pigs invasion
    The CIA trains anti-Castro Cuban exiles to invade Cuba. Their goal was to overthrow goverment. The invasion force began in Guatemala and it departed in six ships from a port in Nicaragua on April 14th. The U.S. convinces Soviets that they won't resist their expansion into Latin America, and the invaders are easily defeated.
  • Cuban Missle Crisis

    Cuban Missle Crisis
    In 1962 the Soviets secretly built missle sites in Cuba. The site was 90 miles from the coast of Florida, and the U.S. discoverd the sites by a spy plane, and viewed it as a threat to the U.S. The United States demanded the missles to be removed. The Soviets agreed to remove the missles if the U.S. didn't invade Cuba.
  • SDI

    SDI
    Strategi Defense Initiatve (SDI) also known as Star Wars, was initiated by President Reagan in 1983. The purpose of it was to develop a sophisticated anti-ballistic missle system to prevent missle attacks from other countires.
  • Tiananmen Square protest

    Tiananmen Square protest
    Tiananmen Square protest was when Chinese troops violently retook the square in Beijing were many protestors camped out for weeks. The protested because they wanted a change in goverment.
  • Fall of the Berlin Wall

    Fall of the Berlin Wall
    Hungry allowed vacationing East Germans to travel to Austria then they traveled to West Germany. The East Germans then closed its borders. After this protests erupted, and the new leader of East Germany attempted to restore stability by allowing people to leave. This all resulted in the collapse of the Communist Party.
  • Collapse of the Soviet Union

    Collapse of the Soviet Union
    Leaders of the Communist Party feared reform and the potential loss of privileges. This resulted in trying to overthrow Gorbachev, but was unsuccessful. Fifteen republics declare independece and in 1991 the Commonwealth of Independent States was formed. The end of the Soviet Union is the end of the Cold War.
  • Formation of the Warsaw Pact

    Formation of the Warsaw Pact
    An alliance formed by the Soviet Union and Eastern European nations in response to West Germany joining NATO. A few countries remained non-aligned like India and China.
