    The greatest complaint

    The greatest complaint
The greatest complaint with the impressionists tradition was that it did not allow artists to refine and harmonize the visual elements in the picture. This was the basis for the cubist movement which would grow out of the post impressionist art.

    Paul Cezanne

    Paul Cezanne
Cezanne revived interest in the still life which had been neglected by artists for nearly 300 years. His thick dobs of paint had a dimension and expresscivity to the still life objects. His real innovation however, was incorporating multiple perspectives of still life objects in a single work. One example of this is 'The basket of Apples'. The cookies and apples in the painting are portrayed with multiple viewpoints, multiple locations and moments in time.

    Vincent Van Gogh

    Vincent Van Gogh
Vincent Van Gogh was a Dutch post impressionist artist whose work is known for its vivid colors and emotional impact. Wheatfield with Crows was painted in the last weeks of van Gogh’s life. Many have claimed it as his last painting. Made on a double-square canvas, depicts a dramatic, cloudy sky filled with crows over a wheat field, a sense of isolation is heightened by a central path leading nowhere and by the uncertain direction of flight of the crows.

Post Impressionists aim to make art an emotional experience through the use of symbolism, vibrant colours and captivating forms. It can be thought of as an exaggerated form of the impressionism that came before. Like impressionists, post impressionists focused of what the viewers might see if they only got a glimpse of the scene portrayed. Calculated juxta positions and symbolism as tools are used to convey meaning in their work.

    Rural scenes and everyday objects

    Rural scenes and everyday objects
Post Impressionists chose rural scenes and everyday objects for their paintings. The impressions recorded by post impressionists were less journalistic and more highly personal and artists thick brush strokes drew attention to the expressiveness of their art. The post impressionist movement was initiated by a few independent artists. Paul Cezanne was the oldest of the group, which also included Vincent Van Gogh, Paul Gauguin and Jeorges Seurat.
  • 1883 BCE

    Jeorges Seurat

    Jeorges Seurat
Seurat had begun experimenting with colour even before the post impressionist movement took shape. He places dabs of pure colour next to each other instead of mixing them like traditional artists did. That way the viewers eye could blend the paintings colours which meant that the same painting could appear differently to different individuals. Seurat portrayed various elements as simplistic shapes and layed them out flat on the canvas, giving a decidedly abstract look and feel.

Married women obtain the right to acquire their own property
The 1870 Married Women's Property Act had been widely criticized for failing to provide sufficient safeguards for married women. A further act provided something approaching equality for women since it allowed women to acquire and retain any property deemed separate from that of their husband's. They also received the same legal protection as husbands if they needed to defend their right to property.

The beginning of the Battle of Nui Bop in the Sino-French War
While neither side could be considered to have a military victory, China was considered the actual loser. China had entered the war to prevent France from destroying the relationship of a protectorate that existed between China and Annam. The Chinese were also eager to avoid having France as a neighbor. China obviously failed in both of these goals. The relationship between China and Annam was severed as the treaties establishing Annam as a French colonial possession were recognized by China.
