  • Proclamation of Neutrality

    Proclamation of Neutrality
    George Washington decided that the U.S. would remain neutral during fights between other nations and they couldn't use ships to carry war supplies to fighting countries. Both France and Britain thought they deserved aid from the U.S, which lead to causes of the War of 1812. Britain began impressing U.S. soldiers into the British Navy and preventing trade between France and America. Picture is George Washington who was president when this was approved.
  • War with Tripoli

    War with Tripoli
    Tripoli wanted money from U.S. ships traveling in the Mediterranean sea in exchange for protection. Thomas Jefferson refused to make additional payments when Tripoli increased their demands, so Tripoli issued war on the U.S. Jefferson sent warships to Tripoli and increased the size of the navy.   • Louisiana Purchase

    Louisiana Purchase
    A historic deal with the French called the Louisiana Purchase said that the U.S. could buy Louisiana from the French. It doubled the U.S. land area and part of 15 states were carved out of it.   • War of 1812

    War of 1812
    The U.S tried to invade British territory but failed. U.S. navy ships were very successful in battles with Britain. British took soldiers and forced them to join them. The U.S. was accused of getting Natives to attack western settlers. The British burned the White House and other buildings in 1814. They also tried to capture Maryland but failed.     Monroe Doctrine

  • Tariff of Abominations

    Tariff of Abominations
    John Adams approved of taxes that made foreign goods more expensive for people to buy. Purpose was protecting factories in Northern states from foreign competition, even though Southern states had few factories. As a result, fewer raw materials were bought from Southern states so they lost money on those. The South ended up paying more for manufactured goods.   • Trail of Tears

    Trail of Tears
    Pressure led some states to seize Native American farmlands. Andrew Jackson didn't stop them, but helped them in 1803. The Indian removal act was cleared and 5 tribes were forced to move onto Indian territory. The Cherokee went to court and confirmed that land seizure was illegal. Cherokees marched onto Indian territory. American took a lot of land for themselves and 4000 Indians died of starvation and disease. Picture is Trail of Tears from google images.

    Alien and Sedation Acts
    Laws were issued to strengthen security of the nation/stop criticism to the president (John Adams). Many people thought the laws were used so Federalists could take votes from Republicans.
