  • Proclamation of Neutrality

    The U.S. wouldn't take sides of any country when fighting other nations. They would remain neutral. Both France and Britain thought they deserved aid from the U.S. because both the countries had helped the United States before. Britain then began impressing U.S. sailors and forced them to join the British navy. They also tried to stop trade between France and the U.S. which led to the War of 1812
  • Alien and Sedition Acts

    The Alien and Sedition Acts consists of three laws. The Alien Enemies Act allowed the president to imprison or deport citizens of enemy nations. The Alien Friends Act allowed the president to deport even citizens if considered dangerous. The Naturalization Act required foreign citizens to live in the U.S. for at least 14 years before becoming a citizen. The Sedition Act was used to imprison those who criticized the government. Many states created laws going against it.
  • War with Tripoli

    War with Tripoli
    The War of Tripoli took place in 1801 in the North African region of Tripoli. Tripoli needed money from U.S. ships in exchange for protection from pirates. As Tripoli's demands increased, Thomas Jefferson denied their requests and Tripoli declared war on the U.S. on May 14. After four years of naval combat and invasions, a peace treaty was signed between the two countries in June of 1805. As a result of this war, Thomas Jefferson increased the size of the U.S. navy.

  • War of 1812

    War of 1812
    Great Britain and France were at war. The United States did not want to get involved. Great Britain tried to stop U.S. ships from stopping in French ports. Great Britain also captured U.S. sailors and forced them to join the British Navy. James Madison signed a Declaration of War on June 18, 1812. The U.S. then tried to invade Canada which belonged to Great Britain. Later on, Great Britain invaded Baltimore and Washington. A piece treaty was signed in 1814. The U.S. became more independent.
  • Monroe Doctrine

    James Monroe created the Monroe Doctrine policy. This policy warns European monarchies that the U.S, would have a strong response if they interfered with problems in North or South America. This shaped American Foreign policies.
  • Tariff of Abominations

    This policy made foreign goods more expensive for the people in the south. This was meant to save the north from competition because the north had more factories. Unlike the south. Therefore, the south lost lost money.
