Phoenix College

  • Joliet Community College founded in Illinois

    This is the first junior college in the country. The college was co-founded by the then-president of the University of Chicago in 1901.
    Significance: This is the original; the one upon which the rest are based.
  • Phoenix College Founded

    Phoenix College, flagship campus of the Maricopa County Community College District was founded in 1920 as an extension of the Phoenix Union High School. This is particularly important to me as this is where I work.
  • First Graduating Class at Phoenix College

    Colleges are nothing without students. This first graduating class in 1922 was made up of 5 students.
  • Establishment of the Maricopa County Community College System

    MCCCD was established in 1962 and began setting up satellite campuses in the metropolitan area. Over time this district system allowed for greater consistency of education across the region.
  • Computer-aided Instruction Pilot Program

    In 1975 Phoenix College entered into a pilot program using computers to help teach math and english students. Technology has always been an important part of education, and when used well, can enhance the classroom experience.
  • More than One Thousand Community Colleges

    By 2000 there were more than one thousand community colleges in the country. That creates an enormous opportunity to serve students populations across the country.
  • One Hundred Years of Phoenix College

    Next year we will celebrate the 100th anniversary of Phoenix College. This means 100 years of serving an extremely diverse community in the heart of the valley.
