Peter is born Pyotr Alekseyevich in Moscow Russia. He was the 14th of his mom's 16 children, so,he was an unlikley heir to the throne.

In 1682, Peter became a joint ruler of Russia with his brother, Ivan V. They are both crowned because Ivan was sickly, like their previous ruler, who died at only 20 years old. Because of this, throughout their short reign together, Ivan is more of a figurehead, with Peter making all the descisions.

Peter sails to western Europe to learn about their customs and manufacturing technniques, he was the first czar to do this. When he returns, he is inspired with new ways to westernize Russia in order to be able to better compete with Europe.

St Petersburg is founded because Peter wanted a seaport in the West to promote education and growth. Because the land was swampy, thousands of serfs were forced to work it every summer, and once it was finished, nobles were sent there to populate it.
