  • First swimming championship

    The first swimming championship was held in Australia in 1846. It was a 400m race.

    The first Australian open was held on the 17/11/1905 and was won by an Australian, Rodney Heath.

    The first ever recorded game of ice hockey was played in Australia on July 17 1906.
  • Women and girls are allowed to play sports in Australia

    Although women and girls were excluded from all sports for many years. In 1922 a committee recommended that girls may be able to play some sports which are, swimming, rowing, cycling and horseback riding. Women were only allowed to play these sports solely for medical purposes and were not played overly competitively.
  • First Aboriginal Australians to compete in the Olympics

    Michael Ah Matt, Adrian Blair and Francis Roberts were the first Aboriginal Australians to compete in the 1964 Tokyo Olympics.

    Catherine Astrid Salome Freeman was the first Aboriginal Australian to win an Olympic gold medal in 1996.

    Steven Bradbury was the frst Australian to win a winter olympic games gold medal in 2002 for the 1000m speed skating sprint. He also won a bronze medal in 1994, which was the first winter olympic games medal won by an Australian.
