    The Cambrai Madonna

    The Cambrai Madonna
    Artist: St. Luke
The painting shows a baby Jesus in his mothers arms. Most Byzantine paintings are religious and this painting certainly is that. Like many other Byzantine paintings, there is no focus on the background. Jesus and his mother are easily the stand out focus of the painting.
I was attracted to the painting because I have rarely seen paintings of a baby Jesus. Most paintings with Jesus depict him as a man with a long beard.

The Delivery of the Keys to St. Peter

The Delivery of the Keys to St. Peter
    Artist: Pietro Perugino
The painting shows Jesus delivering the keys to St. Peter. It is a renaissance painting because Jesus is the same size as the other men. In previous eras, Jesus is usually depicted as larger than the rest. There was an emphasis on the background.
I liked the composition of the painting. It had a lot of depth which attracted my eyes. Paintings with such detail and depth were new and rare at that particular time period. The amount of detail in this painting is interesting.
  • The Rape of Tamar

    The Rape of Tamar
    Artist: Eustache Le Sueur
This is an oil painting based on the biblical story of Tamar being raped by her brother. It is similar to other Boroque paintings since it is rich in detail and is violent. Most Boroque paintings included nudity and/or violence.
I was interested in the photo because it is a fascinating story. Siblings don't normally rape one another. I liked the detail in the clothing and facial expressions of all three people in the painting.
  • Race of the Riderless Horses

    Race of the Riderless Horses
    Artist: Horace Vernet
The painting looks like a horse race broke into complete chaos. Humans started tangling with the horses. It was typical of romanticism paintings because it has a sense of awe and terror to it. The colors were rich and detailed as well.
I was attracted to the painting because there was a lot going on. There is no one standout focus of the painting. It makes you think what the story is behind the painting and it is very colorful and detailed.
  • The Meeting

    The Meeting
    Artist: Gustave Courbet
Realism paintings avoided supernatural and exotic elements in the paintings. This painting looks completely natural and realistic. Artists focused on everyday life. There was less drama in the paintings which makes the images more relatable to people.
I was attracted to the image because it looked like an ordinary day in the park. They are socializing and taking their dog for a walk. Every element of the painting is natural, which is what realism is known for.
  • A Holiday in Mentone

    A Holiday in Mentone
    Artist: Conder
Impressionist paintings usually have small and thin brush strokes. Many Impressionist paintings also had a sense of movement. The people on the bridge are walking. The image depicts light very well like most Impressionist paintings.
I was attracted to the painting because I enjoy beaches. Going to beaches is the best way for me to relax. I liked the lighting in the photo and the shadow under the bridge tells the viewer that it is early in the morning. I also like peaceful images.
  • Golconda

    Golconda
    Artist: Rene Magritte
Surrealism is the exact opposite of realism. Paintings are not realistic and it appears as if it is raining men in this painting. The aim of this movement was to start dreaming again. It focused on elements that would surprise the viewer. Men raining down is definitely shocking.
I liked the image because it basically defines surrealism. It will never rain humans. The men appear to be identical with a raincoat and hat. Rene could be portraying that all men are the same.
  • Machaco Runa

    Machaco Runa
    Artist: Pablo Amaringo
The following painting is a visionary painting, which is a contemporary style of painting. It has a spiritual and mystical theme which is common is visionary paintings. It has many colors and the entire painting is in focus.
It was very attractive on the eye because of the colors and spiritual theme to it. The painting is difficult to explain because it does not necessarily have a meaning. This makes the painting mystical and visionary.
