Muhammad was born in Mecca. He lived there for the first 52 years of his life. He was born to father, Abdullah (who died 6 mo before he was born) and his mother, Amina.

Muhammad's birth mother, Amina, died from illness when he was 6 years old. He became an orphan.

Muhammed worked for a wealthy widow merchant named Khadija. They got married when he was 25 years old and she was almost 40. They had six kids but two of them died in infancy.

He often fasted and meditated in a cave outside town. One time, he had visionary experiences and was instructed to recite words that they attributed to God. It was several years before he talked about it outside his family.

Muhammad begins to preach his revelations publicly. His words anger some people. Some tribes of Mecca start to distance themselves from him and his tribe. The leaders of Mecca even attempted to assassinate him.

His wife dies and soon after his uncle dies too.

Muhammad and his followers traveled to Yathrib. The city wanted him to act as their mediator. He stayed there for six years and built up the Muslim community.

Muslims won the battle of Badr. They lost in the battle of Uhud. They outlasted the Meccans in the battle of the Trench. They signed a treaty and were able to live in Arabia in peace.

Power shifted away from the once-powerful Meccans, and Muhammad and his Muslims marched into Mecca in January of 630. They were joined by the Meccans and there was no bloodshed as they entered Mecca.

He died on June 8, 632 after having an illness. He was buried in a mosque in Medina. His teachings continued and spread around the world.
