  • Convict colony?!

    Convict colony?!
    Joseph Banks, a British man, suggests that the coast of Australia be used as a penal (convict) colony. This idea led to the colonization of Australia. Natives were against the idea, because they didn't want convicted criminals living with them.
  • Arthur Phillip and convict ships

    Arthur Phillip and convict ships
    The first ship of convicts, captained by Arthur Phillips, lands on Botany Bay, Australia but struggles greatly. Arthur Phillip was appointed governor of the colony New South Wales. He lead the effort to settle Australia.
  • European colony

    The second fleet of convicts arrive and change Australia. The colony became more sophisticated with the second and third fleets’ arrivals. More settlements were made for the convicts to live.

    Sheep are brought to Oceania from South Africa by John Macarthur. The sleeps' wool was used for spinning and weaving clothing. This really helped Oceania's economy.

    Australia became unified! Their unification included SIX colonies, each named after their general region. As a unified nation, Australia became a more prominent part of the world as it gained strength.
  • Time to start mapping!

    Time to start mapping!
    Matthew Flinders finishes mapping the continent and settlers have created villages around the coast. Mapping the continent makes exploration later in time easier. This also allowed the people of the continent to learn where they could settle, which they soon did, throughout the continent.

    New Zealand becomes self-governed. So far, they're ahead of Australia, who has yet to become a self-governed colony. This gives New Zealand an advantage over the rest of Oceania to make their own rules and regulations.

    Tasmania gains independence from South Wales, ie, British Australia. As the years wear on, more and more of the British colonies are gaining independence. Tasmania gaining its independence was a small victory for Oceania, as it seemed Britain was losing its hold over them. Their freedom was on its way.

    The rest of Australia is conquered by Britain due to suspicion of France’s interest in Australia. While most of Australia was under Britain's control prior to this, Britain began feeling paranoia about sharing the large land mass with France; so they took all of Australia for themselves. This also kept France from expanding their empire, making them a not-so-feared enemy by Britain.

    British Parliament bans the transportation of convicts to Australia. This allows the aboriginals to live in peace. No more murder or hostile take-over of their land (because that already happened). This is also important because it meant no more criminals were arriving in Australia just to be locked up.

    Copper mines found in Australia. The beginning of mining really boosted Australia's economy. It also gave the continent hundreds of jobs for the people living there. The copper that was mined also made fantastic tools.

    The gold and copper rush begins in Australia. As more people learn of the mines and metals, they move to Australia, making the population boom. During this time, Melbourne also gains independence from New South Wales! Australia is starting to chipper up from the economic boom, and population boom, and new independences being gained.

    Chinese people immigrate to Australia because of the gold rush, but they are sorely discriminated against. Laws begin being made to keep the Asians out. Australia wanted to be seen as the "Land of the White Men". The white men of Australia probably just didn't want anyone taking their gold, and discrimination was the best way to kepp their goods and money for themselves.

    Brisbane, Australia gains independence from New South Wales. More territory in Australia gains independence. This is the dawn of a new age for Australia, and they will use these small grants of independence to the advantage of furthering their continent.

    Parliament grants South Australia administrative control of the northern territory. Slowly, Australia is gaining rein over the lands. The more territory granted to them, the more freedom they have. Vague outlines of the making of this country are being made.

    Britain encourages Australia to try and rule themselves. This is a huge leap for Australia, politically. This also enables Australia to make their own rules and regualtions for their people.

    Whaling, the killing of whales for baleen, is first recorded in New Zealand in 1871. Whaling was a great commodity for the people of New Zealand. From the large mammal, the hunters gained not only meat, but blubber to sell, and bones to use for goods and the production of other goods.

    Governor Lord Glasgow signed a new Electoral Act into law. This law made New Zealand the first self-governing country in the world to allow women the right to vote in parliamentary elections. Women gained the right to vote in NZ even before women in America had the right, proving the advancement of this area.
