Settlers began to arrive in present day Saskatchewan. The Metis who had already been living there began to fear losing their land again.

Riel seized the Parish Church at Batoche. He also created another provisional government. This gained him the support of First nations cheifs.

After Realizing that war was oround the corner, he appointed Gabriel Dumont as his military commander.

Dumont realized that his army was low in number so he decided to use "guerrilla tactics". T

Dumont's "ambushing" style was very effective against the government's unprepared army. On this battle, the police and army were forced to retreat.

A group of Cree warriors assembled at Frog Lake. They wanted "Thomas Quinn" to be punished because he treated the Cree badly. Quinn refused to be a hostage and was shot. The chaos that followed 8 more men were killed.

Dumont organized 150 Metis and First Nations people to ambush governemt soldiers at Fish creek. The government was originaly losing and suffered casualties untill reinforcements arrived. Both sides retreated in the end.

Poundmaker's fighters encountered a governemt force at "Cut Knife". Poundmaker wanted more peace and convinced the warriors to not pursue the army. Many lives were saved that day.

Riel was impatient with Dumont's progress and told Dumont to organize all of his troops at Batoche. This was a vital mistake as the government was easily able to outnumber and overwhelm Dumont's force. Riel surrendered and was arrested. Dumont fled to United States.

6 cree men were put on trial and were hanged for their part in The Frog Lake Massacre . This incident was independant from the Metis and thus got much more attention.
