Noam Chomsky (1928-)

  • Cognitive Psychology: Chomsky Reviews Skinner

Chomsky is one of the founders of cognitive psychology. In a review of B. F. Skinner's work, Chomsky argued against the dominance of behaviorism within psychology. He thought that psychology needed a focus on people's mental lives instead of concentrating only on behavior. This led to a more interdisciplinary approach to psychology. Chomsky, Noam. "A Review of B.F. Skinner's Verbal Behavior." Language, 35, No. 1 (1959), 26-58. http://cogprints.org/1148/1/chomsky.htm
  • "Aspects of the Theory of Syntax" is published

This book set Chomsky on course to become the "father of modern linguistics." He argues, in contrast to opinions at the time, that language, even grammar, is a basic instinct in humans and is picked up naturally and creatively by children. Chomsky, Noam. Aspects of the Theory of Syntax. Cambridge: M.I.T. Press, 1965.
  • "Manufacturing Consent: The Political Economy of the Mass Media"

This book highlighted Chomsky's political position and influence. In this and other books, he argues that the media and other intellectuals spread propaganda in order to ensure citizen compliance. This is to protect the wealth and power of a small elite class, especially the heads of corporations. Herman, Edward S, and Noam Chomsky. Manufacturing Consent: The Political Economy of the Mass Media. New York: Pantheon Books, 1988.
