Alonzo Herndon was a wealthy African American who owned a succesful barber shop. In 1906 be bought a life insurance company on Sweet Auburn Avenue. The company wanted to make it easier for blacks to protect themselves.

The Atlanta Race Riots of 1906 were started because of growing tension between the whites and the African Americans. The whites accused the blacks of abusing their women. In the end, there were 25-40 African Americans dead and 2 whites dead.
