Court of Appeals Judge President George H.W. Bush appointed Thomas to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia. Very shortly after taking this job, Bush would again appoint Thomas to a high-ranking position. -

Senate Confirmation Hearings for U.S. Supreme Court The Senate Judiciary Committee heard testimony from Thomas as to why he would make an outstanding Supreme Court Justice. Then-Sen. Joe Biden was the chairman of the committee who also heard testimony from a former EEOC employee who claimed Thomas sexually harassed her. Anita Hill testified before Congress that Thomas made untoward comments at her. Hill was a law professor at the University of Oklahoma. -

Senate confirmation Despite the controversy, Thomas was confirmed by the Senate as the second African American Supreme Court Justice after Thurgood Marshall. The final vote was 52-48, so it was far from easy for Thomas to earn his seat on the bench. -
