    The wounded knee camp was raided in the 1800s. U.S. cavalry surrounded a soux camp and started massacuring men women and children. in 1963, a group of militant indians armed them selves and took over the wounded knee camp to dramatize the cruelty of the old U.S. governments treatment towards the native americans. The american indians occupied wounded knee for 71 days. The event brought atttention to the indian movement and showed the corruptness of the old government.

    On march 2, 1964 native americans stage fish ins to protect treaty rights. Back in 1818-1862 the U.S. government made treaties with native american tribes that entitled them to fish freely in many rivers and lakes. In the 60s the government started arresting natives for fishing the water without permits. The outraged native american tribes begin holding fish ins where natives and native supporters go in large numbers to fish without licences. They where inspired by civil right "sit-ins".

    the Alcatraz island was one of the most successfull american indian protests in the movement. Because the indians where very poor and had high unemployment, they went to go occupy alcatraz island. The occupation succeded in getting 52 bills passed that would give indian tribes more rights in leading there own people. It was an eye-opener for the native american movement and helped gain a lot of support for them by the public. It showed what the natives could do to protect there culture.

    native americans walk 2,700 miles to Washington D.C. Concerned about there native water and land rights where being threatened by the U.S. government, the American indian movement organizes a walk starting in San Francisco to washington D.C. The native americans where protesting several bills the government wanted to pass that would interfere with treaties made between them and the tribes. the protesters camped out in a park and with everything they where given it costed 250,000 tax dollars.
