    This was a 19 month occupation of the decommissioned prison. The plan was to develop a Native American cultural center on the Island. This was plausible under a treaty that allows Native Americans to seize excess federal land.Up to 89 people occupied the island until forceful removal by the government.

    A campaign designed to generate media coverage and attention to Indians griefs with the federal government.They wanted to draw on sympathy of the people and portrayed the struggle they faced through many forms of mass media.AIM wrote a 20 points position paper on change they wanted for their communities. They then staged a march across the infamous trail of broken tears to Washington DC, where they presented the 20 points position paper to the federal government.

    Siege at Wounded Knee
    In 1973, members of the American Indian Movement occupied Wounded Knee for 71 days to protest conditions on the reservation. Tensions grew between federal troops and American Indians and resulted in conflict. Gunfire was exchanged constantly killing two native Americans and permanently paralyzing a federal Marshall.AIM surrendered and was acquitted in court after the judge discovered the FBI had tampered with a key witness. This was successful in Bringing attention and sympathy to the cause.

    This act gets its name from why it was created, regulate Indian gaming practices. This gave state governments authority to over tribal gaming activities.This created some level of economic independence as it kept Indians in charge of their own reservations.Affects of this act are still controversial but there was a decrease in Native American poverty rates.
