    On October 12th Christopher Columbus reached the Bahamas. Then he sighted Cuba thinking it was China, then he reached Hispaniola thinking it was Japan. He created a small colony with 39 of his men then returned to Spain with Idian captives, gold and spices.

    Hernan Cortes Conquered the Aztecs

    Aztec capital falls to Cortes
    In 1519 the Spaniards and their 1,000 warriors entered Tenochtitlán. Cortes captured their leader. In 1520 cortes defeated the Spanish force. When he returned he found the garrsion under seige from rebelling aztecs. They fought their way through the cities capital, when they rejoined their group after a three month seige they defeated the Aztecs.

    Bartelome de Las Casas was known for his efforts in defending the Native Americans. He was titled 'Defender of the Indians.'
  • Founding of Jamestown

    Jamestown Founded
    Jamestown was the first permanent English settlement. It was founded by around 100 settlers in 1607 along the James River in Virginia. During the first two years starvation, disease, and Native American attacks wiped out most of the colony until the newly appointed governor arrived with supplies.

    The French defeated George washington 1754-1755. In 1758 the Brittish were victorious in Louisburg.They took Fort Frontenac a month later then they closed in on Quebec. Once they took Montreal the French lost Canada. In 1763 at the Peace Conference the Brittish got Canada and florida. Spain got Louisiana and France kept its West Indian Sugar islands,

    The British Empire began to tighten its control over the colonies. Colonial expansion westward was shut down and this effected all 13 colonies. This was supposed to be temporary. Only licsenced traders could go west or deal with Indians. Many colonists defied this Porclamation.

    The treaty of paris ended the revolutionary war. The negotiation began in 1782, negotiating; American Independance, American fishermen’s right of access to the Grand Banks, and Great Britian doubling the sixe of their new nation. The final document was signed September 3, 1783.

    After an American army defeated a native american army at the battle of Fallen Timbers, natives relinquished land south and east of a boundary while Americans gave up all land North and west of it. Indians could still hunt on the land and Americans could establish trading posts. Both parties ended up dishonoring this treaty.

    Lewis and Clark Expedition

    Lewis and Clark Expedition After the Louisiana Purchase President Thomas Jefferson wanted to explore the new land. He appointed his secretary Meriwether Lewis who chose William Clark to accompany him. they went down the Ohio, just outside of St. louis, Northwest on the Missouri River and prepared for the journry to the Pacific. They went up the Missouri, then they went downriver to Columbia. They returned in 1806.

    TecumsehTecumseh was an Indian political leader and war cheif. He lead political movements that lead to the founding of Prophetstown settlement. In the Battle of Tippercanoe destroyed the settlement was destroyed and in the war of 1812 he he died fighting with British forces.

    After the creek Indian nation killed roughly 250 Alabama settlers, Andrew jackson waged a war of manuevers and brutal attacks against them, ending their rebellion.

    Indian Removal Act The act was signed into law by Andrew Jackson. It authorized Indians to move to unsettled lands in exchange for Indian lands within state borders. Most tribes resisted relocation.

    Because of the Indian Removal Act thousands of Indians were forced to walk thousands of miles to 'Indian Territory' and many died in the process. This path was named The Trail of Tears.

    Gold Rush of 1849 Gold nuggets were discovered in sacramento and this started the gold rush. The California are ended up with a nonnative population of 10,000 compared to the 1,000 of before, of miners looking for gold.
  • Passage of the Homestead Act

    Union Congress Passes the Homestead Act The western states were opened up for settlement by the Homestead act. Any Americans could then put in a claim for 160 acres of federal land for free. Millions of individual claims were approved.
  • Sand Creek Masacre

    Native Americans are massacred at Sand Creek Colonel John Chivington slaughtered unsuspecting Native Americans. He scattered them all and hunted them down, only nine of his men died in the process but mostly women and children were murdered and mutilated. The Native American Village was also burned.
  • Diminished Buffalo Herds

    American Buffalo Spirit of a Nation Settlers that were trappers and traders were shipping out hundreds of thousands of Buffalo hides each year. Buffalo killing contests killed just as many as the toursits did. More than 4,000 killed in two years. This altered the Indians way of life, taking away a primary source of food.

    Battle of the Little Big HornLakota Sioux and Cheyenne warriors fought against federal troups near the Little Bighorn river. The indians refused to move to a reservation so the U.S. Army attacked them unknowing of the Indians numbers the U.S. army was wuickly outnumbered.
  • Nez Perce War

    Nez Perce fight Battle of Big Hole When a quarter of the Nez Perce people refused to be moved onto a reservation it led to the outbreak of the Nez Perce war. It included four major battles, and on the third battle the indiands were attacked in their sleep. When they retaliated it lasted for four days until the Nez Perce withdrew. The remaining Indians were able to escape.
