    Founding of AIM
    The American Indian Movement brought awareness to the preservation of Natice American culture and traditions. One siginificant event was the "Trail of Broken Treaties" which brought national attention to American Indian issues such as treaty issues, living conditions, and inadequet housing.
  • Russell Means

    Russell Means
    Russel Means is a famous 20th century American Indian activist who championed Indigenous peoples' rights world wide. Russell Means has done everything possible to dramatize and justify the Native American aim of self-determination, such as storming Mount Rushmore, seizing Plymouth Rock, running for President in 1988, and most notoriously leading a 71-day takeover of Wounded Knee, South Dakota, in 1973.

    Occupation of Alcatraz
    A fire that brunded down the American Indian Center in San Fransico left American indians desperate. The "Indians of all tribes" was formed and set out on the unusued land of alcatraz as a new home for a Native American Culture Center and University. Many protestors over the next 2 years fought for American indian rights. However the protestors were forced off the island and Alcatraz was turned into a natioal park.

    Occupation of Wounded Knee by Oglala Sioux
    The Wounded Knee occupation began after elders of the Oglala Sioux tribe complained about being ignored by a corrupt tribal government. Unable to impeach Chairman Dick Wilson. FBI agents and U.S. Marshals set up perimeter. 11 firefights brokeout. 2 sioux indians died. Negotiatins went on throughout on long standing issues. Nixons efforts failed to end the protest. Wounded Knee led to generations of American Indians who get involved in tribal affairs and civil rights. May 8th it ended.

    Native American Language Act
    The tension began with the destruction of Native American Culture through the process of focefully enrolling them in white residential schools.
    In 1990 congress passed the Native American Language Act which recoginizes that Native American language is unique and should be preserved and promoted.
  • Cobell v. Salazar and the Claims resolution act

    Cobell v. Salazar and the Claims resolution act
    This lawsuit began because the federal government violated its trust duties to individual Indian trust beneficiaries.They had a settlemet aggrement on decmber 7 2009. 1 year later President Obama Signs Legislation Approving the Settlement and Authorizing $3.4 billion in Funds which is the claims resoultion act. This effects all indian trust beneficiaries.

    Major accomplishments of the AIM
    The 1972 Indian Education Act gave Indian parents control over their children's schools. The 1976 Indian Health Care Act addressed deficiencies in Indian health care; while the 1978 Indian Child Welfare Act gave tribes control over custody decisions with Indian children.In 1980, the federal government agreed to pay $81.5 million to Passamaquoddy and Penobscot of Maine, $105 million to the Sioux.Court decisions also permitted tribal authorities to sell cigarettes run gambling casinos, levy taxes
