    There was a long conflict for control of the Great Plains of eastern Colorado. The Fort Laramie Treaty guaranteed ownership of the area to Indians. However miners flooded across the region searching for gold and tensions between settlers and Natives rose. Colonel John Chington’s volunteers massacred the Native Americans. The Army was brutal to them, they killed thousands of Indians.

    Battle of Little BigHorn
    The Treaty of Fort Laramie created a large Sioux reservation. Custer led a scientific expedition into Black Hills and claimed he discovered gold. As miners rushed into the Area, the Sioux, Cheyenne, and Arapaho were angry because this was their are. The Indians went on a warpath and Custer’s 7th calvary went to subdue them, buy attacked. He split his force into two and wasn’t aware there were thousands mores Indians. Custer retreats and Indians surround and wipe out his army.
  • Massacre at Wounded Knee

    Massacre at Wounded Knee
    This massacre was the last major conflict between the army and the Native Americans. The ghost dance was a religious ceremony to try to reconnect Native Americans to their past. US settlers feared it was a war dance and this led the US Army to become more severe with the Sioux. US troops tried to disarm a group of Sioux Native Americans and shots were fired and the troops ended up massacring around 200 men, women, and children.
