Wilmont Proviso
This bill aimed to outlaw slavery in territories taken from Mexico. This bill passed in the House of Reprenstatives but was defeated in the Senate thus causing a division in Congress. Although, not a success it led to the formation if the Free Soil Party. -
Compromise of 1850
The Compromise of 1850 made North Carolina a free state. Also, slave trade would be abolished in Washington D.C. This was made a law by Stephen A. Douglas. -
Kansas -Nebraska Act
This act divided Nebraska into two states. These sates are Nebraska and Kansas. This however, turned into a fight for slavery. -
"Bleeding Kansas"
Fights broke out between proslavery and antislavery. Mosly due to who gets the territory in Kansas. After numerous fights for three years, they have earned the name "Bleeding Kansas". -
Caning of Sumner
Chrales Sumner made a speech about proslvaery. In that speech, he verbally attacked A.P. Butler, who is a relative of Preston Brooks. Prior to that, Brooks physically attacked Sumner. -
Scott V. Sandford
Dormer slave, Dred Scott argued that slaves in free states should be set free. His case was taken to the U.S. Supreme Court. Tghis case however, was rejected. -
Attack on Ferry
John Brown was against slvery. Therefore he decided to attack Harpers Ferry. His plan was to make slaves fight ffor their freedom. His plan howevery failed. -
Election of 1860
The Election of 1860 was between Douglas and Lincoln. Lincoln for the North and Douglas for the South. Due to a bigger population in the North, Lincoln won the election.
