Frederick Douglas was born on a plantation in Maryland as a slave.

When his mother dies, he is not allowed to go to his mother's funeral.

When Douglass is 7, he is moved to Baltimore to work for a new master (Mr. Auld)

Mrs. Auld begins to teach Douglass to read but soon stops because her husband makes her.

His old master, Colonel Lloyd, dies so he is sent back and slave families are split up among different plantations. In this process, his grandmother loses all of her children and is sent to the woods to die.

Frederick is sent to Maser Thomas who barely feeds his slaves and is very cruel.

Frederick argues with Master Thomas which leads to him being sent to a farmer name Covey for a year. Covey is a "slave breaker" which makes Frederick lose his optimistic hopes.

Frederick gives a speech about freedom and realizes he has nothing to lose.

Frederick fights against Covey when he tries to whip him and stands up to him. Covey backs down and never whips Frederick again.

After one year, Frederick leaves Covey and goes to work for Mr. Freeland who is much nicer than his previous masters.

While working on Mr. Freeland's plantation, Frederick teaches other slaves to read which soon ends after a group of masters break it up.

Frederick decides he wants to be free and plans to escape within a group of slaves. One slave tells the master and they all get caught.

Frederick is blamed for the escape planning and is sent back to Mr. Auld.

Douglass is rented to a ship builder and sent to Baltimore where he learns trade.

Frederick escapes from slavery and heads to New York where he gets married. Once married, they move to New Bedford, Massachusetts to start a new life.
