Napoleon timeline

  • Period: to

    Italian campaign (green)

the French Army of Italy under Napoleon invaded Italy with the aims of forcing the First Coalition to abandon Sardinia and forcing Austria to withdraw from Italy and eventually he drove them out. I think it was successful because he succeeded in his goals.
  • Period: to

    Egyptian campaign (green)

Napoleons attempt to take Egypt from the control of the ottomans. I think it was rather successful because they eventually took Egypt from the British and Napoleon got to rule Egypt.
  • Consulate (Green)

    Consulate (Green)
Essentially the French government formed after the French Revolution. I think this was successful because it made government in France more efficient and abolished most of the remnants of class and privilege.
  • Banque de France (green)

    Banque de France (green)
A central bank created by Napoleon Bonaparte. I think it was successful because it helped increase the industry by 60% over the next two years.
  • Concordat of 1801 (yellow)

    Concordat of 1801 (yellow)
agreement between Napoleon Bonaparte and papal and clerical representatives in both Rome and Paris, defining the status of the Roman Catholic Church in France and ending the breach caused by the church reforms and confiscations enacted during the French Revolution. While the Concordat restored some ties to the papacy, it was largely in favor of the state; it wielded greater power the Pope than previous French regimes had, and church lands lost during the Revolution would not be returned.
  • Consul for life (green)

    Consul for life (green)
A new constitution of his own devising legislated a succession to rule for his son even though he had not yet fathered any children and he had taken the major steps in creating a new regime in his own image. I think it was successful because as first consul he pushed for piece with England.
  • Napoleonic code (yellow)

    Napoleonic code (yellow)
The Code made the authority of men over their families stronger, deprived women of any individual rights, and reduced the rights of illegitimate children. All male citizens were also granted equal rights under the law and the right to religious dissent, but colonial slavery was reintroduced. I think this was a success because it eventually trickled into other countries and affected them like Austria and the Swiss codes. However undid some reforms previously instated previously.
  • Declared self emperor (green)

    Declared self emperor (green)
During his coronation Napoleon decides to crown himself emperor of France. In my opinion I think that this event was a success for Napoleon because he became the ruler of France.
  • Battle of Trafalgar (Red)

    Battle of Trafalgar (Red)
The battle of trafalgar was a naval battle where the British navy outnumbered the Spanish/French navy and destroyed them and won the battle. It was a utter failure for Napoleon because his navy was completely destroyed.
  • Holy Roman Empire is abolished (Green)

Holy Roman Empire is abolished (Green)
Francis 1 decides to step down from the throne of Austria and which leads to the downfall of the Holy Roman Empire. It was successful because Napoleon was able to get rid of a major empire which stood in his way.
  • Continental System (Red)

    Continental System (Red)
Napoleon's strategy to weaken Britain's economy by banning trade between Britain and states occupied by or allied with France. This was a failure because Great Britain still found ways to get supplies through.
  • Resistance in Spain (Red)

    Resistance in Spain (Red)
While the French army was occupying Portugal Napoleon invaded Spain. Eventually he retreated because him and the army underestimated the Spanish revolutionaries and their willingness to defend Spain.
  • Period: to

    Invasion of Russia (Red)

After retreating from Spain Napoleon and his troops make their March towards Russian to fight the Russian army. During the journey it turns to winter and the soldiers only wore their summer clothes. I think this was a failure because Napoleon dragged his troops out to the freezing cold landscape of Russia and over the course of 6 months 200,000 troops are killed.
  • Period: to

battle of nations at leipzig (red)

Battle that resulted in the destruction of what was left of French power in Germany and Poland. It was unsuccessful because it led to Frances down fall.
  • Napoleon abdicates (Red)

    Napoleon abdicates (Red)
He abdicates after his failed invasion of Russia which resulted in Russia allying with other European nations against Bonaparte. His abdication was unsuccessful because he basically lost everything he had worked for over the past few years.
  • Period: to

    Hundred days (yellow)

also known as the War of the Seventh Coalition, marked the period between Napoleon's return from exile on the island of Elba to Paris. The Battle of Reims went to Napoleon, but this victory was followed by successive defeats from increasingly overwhelming odds.
  • Battle of Waterloo (red)

    Battle of Waterloo (red)
A battle between France and Great Britain that was won by Great Britain and subsequently ended the Napoleonic Wars. I think it was a failure because it ended both the Napoleonic Wars and Napoleon’s goals of conquering all of Europe.
