Also known as Napoleon I, was a French military leader and emperor who conquered much of Europe in the 19th century. He was born on the island of Corsica, on August 15, 1769.

Napoleon won a scholarship to study at a military academy in France at the Royal Military School in Brienne near the town of Troyes. And he graduate from a French military academy in 1785. He then became a second lieutenant in an artillery regiment of the French army.

Napoleon joined to the Ecole Militaire in Paris. He was interested in a naval assignment, but he was assigned to the artillery.

After the graduation from the Ecole Militaire, Napoleon is given a commission.

Napoleon helped suppress a royalist insurrection against the revolutionary government in Paris and was promoted to major general.

Napoleon was given command of the improvised forces defending the Convention in the Tuileries Palace. Napoleon was able to drive the mob away from the National Convention.

Within weeks of driving the royalists from the National Convention, Napoleon was romantically linked to Josphine de Beauharnais (a widow six years his senior who had two teenage children) , who he married on March 9, 1796.

Napoleon was part of a group that successfully overthrew the French Directory. The Directory was replaced with a three-member Consulate, and Napoleon became first consul, making him France’s leading political figure.

Napoleon's invasion of Russia began on June 15, 1812. Napoleon left Russia, of the 600,000 troops he had at the beginning of the invasion 500,000 were either killed, captured or deserted along the way.

After much of Europe unites against Napoleon, his is forced to give up the throne and go to Elba, an island near Italy. His wife and son are forced to leave Paris and they go to Austria to live.

After escaping from Elba, Napoleon goes back to France to try and take control of the army and the government again. The British and Prussians defeat France in June at the Battle of Waterloo.

After his defeat at Waterloo, Napoleon gives up the throne again, but this time he was sent away to Saint Helena in the South Atlantic.

Napoleon died at the age of 51in exile on the island of St. Helena, on may 5, 1821.
