He was born in Corsica, an island in the Mediterranean. He spoke an italian accent. His family was not very rich, but he won a scholarship to a famous military school for education. He had many oppurtunities when the Revolution came to Europe.

There, he won a series of battles and he became famous for speed, suprise, and decisive action. He defeated the armies of the Papal states and their Austrian Allies.

Napoleon took part in this and overthrew the Directory. He took leadership and set up the consulate. It was a republic, but Napoleon held the power. He was first called Consul. In 1802 he becane the consul for life. Two years later he crowned himself Emperor Napoleon I.

This year he agreed with the Catholic Church that the majority of France practiced catholicism as their religion. The church was no longer an enemy of the church.
